We are talking about 6 publications in which there was allegedly no indication of the banned status of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Navalny’s headquarters and the Network organization, recognized as extremist organizations and banned in Russia.
Notifications came both to the editor-in-chief of Mediazona and to the publication itself. According to the practice of Roskomnadzor, as Chikov notes, when a publication without marking is detected, pair protocols are drawn up – for the publication and the official. The publication faces a total fine of 330,000 rubles.
Mediazona editor Yegor Skovoroda, in an interview with The Insider, noted that the publications were marked.
“The last few times, when Roskomnadzor came to us with this nonsense about markings, we really had Artpodgotovka there and we forgot to indicate extremism. But now these instructions were and, apparently, they did not like any specific wording. We assume that it was not written there that they were not only recognized by the court as extremist organizations, but also banned. This is such a clinging to mice, which was not previously characteristic even of Roskomnadzor. Firstly, we are outraged, and secondly, this is a bad sign for all media who are trying to comply with these laws, who are registered in Russia and continue to work in Russia. They start looking for something to cling to massively. We see this not only in Mediazone. Previously, we received much fewer protocols than our colleagues. If you look at the database of the Moscow City Court, then dozens and batches of protocols were drawn up on Ekho Moskvy this fall, and for many different publications, even for pro-government ones. They turned on this logging pipeline for everything. It’s a thing that’s actually impossible to do given the progression of all these banned lists of people, organizations and media. It is neither technically nor physically impossible to track and keep in mind. Naturally, everyone will have some failures if you conscientiously fulfill these insane and senseless demands. I think that next year we will see a wave of protocols. Roskomnadzor will try with the ruble to crush all these media outlets that are trying to work despite foreign agency bans.”
In February 2021, Mediazona was fined under the same article for mentioning the Artpodgotovka movement, also recognized as extremist and banned in Russia.
