Latvian special services have detained two people on suspicion of collaborating with Russian military intelligence. About it informs Leta agency with reference to the State Security Service of the country.
It is specified that the detentions were carried out last year. Those arrested are charged with suspicion of long-term cooperation with the military intelligence of Russia and providing it with information that is not subject to publicity about the defense sector of the republic.
The detentions took place as part of the investigation of two criminal cases. According to the information of the Latvian special services, these people met with representatives of the Russian military intelligence on the territory of Russia. Both were given the status of suspects, they were chosen as a measure of restraint in the form of detention.
Recall that in early December in Latvia excited criminal case against the deputy and former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic Janis Adamsons. He is suspected of spying for Russia.
The General Prosecutor’s Office of Latvia addressed the parliament with a request to open a criminal case against Adamsons. The investigation believes that Adamsons has been transmitting information to Russia about the army budget, procurement and the eastern border for four years. The case includes 43 episodes of espionage.
In Soviet times, Adamsons served in the Navy on Sakhalin. According to the archives of the LETA news agency, Adamsons served as deputy chief of staff for intelligence work. In 1992 he returned to Latvia and was approved as Deputy Commander of the Latvian Naval Forces. Participated in the withdrawal of the Russian army from the territory of Latvia, was later approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs.
Earlier, the court recognized his connection with the KGB, but he retained his position as a member of parliament.
