45 OPCW member countries will give Russia 10 days to answer questions about Navalny’s poisoning

The countries participating in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will ask Russia questions about the poisoning of Navalny. About it reported British delegation to the OPCW.

45 countries informed the executive board of the organization that they will formally ask Russia questions about the poisoning of Navalny in accordance with Article IX of the Convention. According to the rules, Russia has 10 days to respond.

In October last year, the OPCW reported that in the analyzes of biomaterials by Alexei Navalny discovered traces of the poison of the “Novichok” group. The Organization clarified that the analyzes were checked in two laboratories. In blood and urine samples from Navalny, biomarkers of a cholinesterase inhibitor were found.

“The results of analysis by OPCW-designated laboratories of biomedical samples collected by the OPCW team and transferred to the Federal Republic of Germany confirm that the cholinesterase inhibitor biomarkers found in Mr. Navalny’s blood and urine samples have structural characteristics similar to those of toxic chemicals in the lists 1.A.14 and 1.A.15, which were added to the Chemicals Annex to the Convention during the twenty-fourth session of the Conference of the States Parties in November 2019. This cholinesterase inhibitor is not listed in the Chemicals Annex to the Convention, ”the OPCW said.

OPCW Director General Fernando Arias said these results are of serious concern. States parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention declared the use of chemical weapons by anyone under any circumstances as reprehensible and completely contrary to the legal norms established by the international community. Therefore, it is now important that the participating States adhere to the norm they decided to adhere to more than 25 years ago, he said. He confirmed the readiness of the Secretariat to continue to assist them with the help of independent experts.

In turn, the Russian delegation to the OPCW statedthat “Russia owes nothing to anyone.”
