The Italian parliament has re-elected the current president of Italy, 80-year-old Sergio Mattarella, as head of state. About it writes Corriere della Sera.
“The re-election of Sergio Mattarella as President of the Republic is great news for Italians. I am grateful to the President for his decision to comply with the Parliament’s desire to re-elect him for a second term,” said Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
According to Corriere della Sera, by the evening of January 29, Mattarella had won 759 votes (505 votes are needed for re-election), winning in the eighth round of the presidential election, which began on January 24. It is noted that his result is one of the best in the history of Italy. Only Alessandro Pertini scored more than Mattarella, who in 1978 received 832 votes during the final round.
Before the presidential elections, Sergio Mattarella repeatedly stressed that he ruled out the possibility of re-election. At the same time, Mario Draghi, being one of the main contenders for the presidency, asked the president to stay for another term. Mattarella has been President of Italy since 2015.
