Twitter fined 10 million rubles for refusing to remove tweets mentioning FBK and Navalny

Twitter has been fined 10 million rubles for refusing to remove tweets mentioning FBK founder Alexei Navalny and other fund members. About it reported in a court.

“As part of the fulfillment of the requirements to take measures to restrict access to information resources, Roskomnadzor sent notices to the owner of the Twitter information resource about restricting access to information resources that contain information disseminated in violation of the law, namely calls to participate in an unauthorized action on September 18 2021, information about the activities of FBK, Alexei Navalny, Maria Pevchikh, Leonid Volkov, as well as an assessment of events at Perm State University, ”the court documents say.

According to the deputy head of Roskomnadzor Vadim Subbotin, Google, Facebook and Twitter have not removed about 5.5 thousand materials with prohibited information, today they have been fined for a total amount of more than 140 million rubles.

Recall that Twitter, Meta (ex-Facebook) and Google face multimillion-dollar fines in Russia for refusing to remove content that the Russian authorities call “harmful”. Mainly concerns posts about protests in support of Alexei Navalny.

Despite the fact that the Russian authorities, complaining about the disobedience of Western social networks, appeal to the fact that they do not remove child pornography, suicide and drug propaganda, the number of such publications compared to protest content in court decisions is very small. So, only 12 references are devoted to suicides. And in total, out of 469 links, for which social networks were fined for not deleting, more than 250 are dedicated to actions in support of Navalny.

Social networks are also fined for jokes about power. Roskomnadzor found posts with “obvious disrespect for the state, the constitution and the president of the Russian Federation.” On Twitter alone in the winter of 2020-2021, the regulator sent 75 notices demanding that several such posts be removed.
