Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov and US-Filipino journalist Maria Ressa received Nobel medals and laureate diplomas “for their efforts to preserve freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and peace.”

“Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov are participants in the war, where the printed word is a weapon, and the truth is their goal. And every disclosure of abuse of power is their victory, ”said the head of the committee.

“This award is for all real journalism. This award was given to my dead colleagues from Novaya Gazeta – Igor Domnikov, Yuri Shchekochikhin, Anna Politkovskaya, Anastasia Baburova, and Stas Markelov, Natasha Estemirova. This award is also given to living colleagues, to a community that fulfills a professional duty, “- said in a lecture by Muratov, published Nobel Committee.

Muratov also said that he is taking the initiative to create an International Tribunal against Torture, “whose task is to collect data on the use of torture in different parts of the world and states. To establish the executioners and their owners involved in such crimes. ” He expressed hope for the help of investigative journalists from all over the world.
