American writer Alice Siebold apologized in front of a man who was cleared of charges of raping her in 1981 last week. Anthony Broadwater was arrested on her charges and spent 16 years in prison.
In her statement of apology, Siebold said, “My biggest regret is that the life you might have been unfairly stolen from you, and I know that no amount of apology can change what happened to you and never will change. ” Broadwater, released through his lawyers, said in a statement that he was “glad she apologized.”
Anthony Broadwater, 61, was acquitted of the crime by the New York State Supreme Court last week. The acquittal stemmed from serious flaws in the 1982 investigation and fears that the wrong person had been sent to prison.
Alice Siebold was a student at Syracuse University when she was assaulted and raped in 1981. She described these events in her 1999 memoir Happy.
