A London court has sentenced three Italian citizens who have committed a series of burglaries. The damage they caused was the most significant in British crime history. informs Sky News.
The thefts were committed before Christmas 2019. Then the robbers visited the houses of the model and daughter of the former head of Formula 1 Tamara Ecclestone, ex-Chelsea football player Frank Lampard and the family of the then deceased billionaire Vishai Srivaddanaprabhi, who owned the Leicester City football club. The damage from these thefts amounted to $ 35 million.
Many stolen valuables have not been found so far. The thieves did not leave fingerprints or DNA samples at the crime scene. Neither alarm systems, nor video cameras, nor security officers could find them. The police called the thieves “a gang of ghosts.” It was possible to get on their trail only after polling more than 1000 taxi drivers.
In the case of major thefts, three Italian citizens were brought to trial: 24-year-old Yugoslav Jovanovic, 45-year-old Alessandro Maltese and 44-year-old Alessandro Donati. Jovanovic was sentenced to 11 years in prison, while Maltese and Donati received eight years and nine months in prison.
According to investigators, the fourth member of the criminal group was a 40-year-old Serbian citizen, Lubomir Romanov, who used documents in the names of Alfredo Lindley and Daniel Vukovic. In August, Serbian authorities refused to extradite him to the UK.
The members of the thieves’ group were assisted by 48-year-old Maria Mester, who worked as an escort, and her 30-year-old son Emil Bogdan Savastru. They were arrested at British airports while trying to take out some of the kidnapped. Maria wore a necklace that belonged to Ecclestone, and Emil wore a watch from billionaire Srivaddanaprabhi. Investigators do not exclude that the thieves had other accomplices.
