CIA chief William Burns came to Russia to warn of Washington’s attention to the movement of Russian wax around the border with Ukraine. About it informs TV channel CNN citing sources.
According to the channel’s interlocutors, Burns was sent on a working trip by US President Joe Biden. During the visit, which took place from 2 to 4 November, the head of the CIA met with senior Russian officials.
CNN notes that “the Biden administration has stepped up its efforts in recent days to de-escalate the growing tensions between Moscow and Kiev.” Burns was supposed to warn Russia against plans to conduct any offensive operations and show that the United States is concerned about “the movement of Russian troops and equipment near the northern border of Ukraine.”
According to the channel’s sources, after his meetings in Russia, Burns “spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an attempt to defuse these tensions.”
In addition, Burns warned the Russian authorities against using the issue of gas exports as an instrument of pressure on Ukraine and European countries due to the danger of an energy crisis in the winter.
At the end of October, The Washington Post, Politico and CIT reported that Russian troops were pulling up to the border in Ukraine following the West 2021 Russian-Belarusian military exercise, which is “a matter of concern.”
