In the Polish city of Pszczyna, a 30-year-old woman died in the 22nd week of pregnancy. The doctors, despite the threat to their lives, did not have an abortion, since in Poland it is forbidden to terminate a pregnancy before the death of the fetus. About it informs Politico.
According to a law recently approved by the Polish Constitutional Court, women can terminate a pregnancy only in the event of rape, incest, or if there is a threat to the mother’s life. At the same time, the law excludes termination of pregnancy due to birth defects in the fetus. Most abortions in Poland were done for this very reason.
The woman was admitted to the hospital with a discharge of amniotic fluid. During hospitalization, doctors confirmed the fetal pathology, but did not have an abortion. The fetus died and the woman developed septic shock, which left her dead in less than 24 hours.
The woman died on September 22, but the story went public this week. According to the family’s lawyer, the doctors did not terminate the pregnancy on time, as they decided to “wait and see”. The lawyer believes that the doctors acted in accordance with the new legislation on an almost complete ban on abortion.
Representatives of the ruling conservative party “Law and Justice”, in turn, believe that this is a “medical error.” They also point out that the law does not prohibit abortion when the life and health of the mother is threatened.
Local activists note that this is the first death associated with current legislation regarding abortion. On November 1, hundreds of people in different cities of Poland took to the streets to honor the memory of the deceased woman and to express disagreement with the almost complete ban on termination of pregnancy. informs AP.
