1. About the return to closed state borders
– In recent decades, many have juggled catchy concepts, according to which the role of the state was declared obsolete and outdated. Allegedly, in the context of globalization, national borders become an anachronism, and sovereignty – an obstacle to prosperity. You know, I already said once, I want to formulate it once again: those who tried to open other people’s borders, relying on their competitive advantages, also said so – this is what actually happened. And as soon as it became clear that someone, somewhere, is achieving great results, they immediately return to the closure of borders in general and, above all, their own – customs borders, whatever, they begin to build walls. Well, we do not see this, or what?
Putin did not specify which cases he had in mind. When he talks about building the walls, he is probably talking about a fence on the US-Mexico border known as the Trump Wall, even though it began to be built under President Clinton. But if this is so, then Putin’s thesis is completely banal: hardly anyone has ever seriously denied the role of states in regulating migration flows. The same applies to the wire fences built during the European migration crisis by Hungary and Spain on their borders with Croatia and Morocco.
The closure of many borders to travel in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly a temporary measure that has nothing to do with long-term trends.
As for customs borders, examples are more difficult to find. The United States under President Trump refused to renew the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), but as a result replaced a trilateral trade agreement between Canada, Mexico and the United States, which differs from NAFTA only in a number of quantitative indicators. In some respects, the new agreement was even closer to opening customs borders than the previous one; thus, American milk producers gained free access to the Canadian market.
Perhaps the most famous case of restoring customs borders and stopping the free movement of labor is Brexit. But this is rather a negative example: having lost foreign workers, Britain faced with an acute shortage of gasoline at gas stations and various goods in stores; the reason is that there are not enough truck drivers in the country to deliver all of this. Customs regulations now have to significantly soften, and London, which initiated the restoration of the customs border with the EU, insists on this.
2. About the horrors of political correctness and “new ethics”
– This, in my opinion, should remind us of something that we now see. Looking at what is happening in a number of Western countries, we learn with amazement domestic practices, which, fortunately, we ourselves left, I hope, in the distant past. The struggle for equality and against discrimination turns into aggressive dogmatism on the verge of absurdity, when the great authors of the past – such as Shakespeare – are no longer taught in schools and universities, because they, these ideas, are considered backward there. The classics are declared backward, not understanding the importance of gender or race. In Hollywood, they release memo how and what to make a movie about, how many characters of what color or gender there should be. It turns out worse than the agitation and propaganda department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
It doesn’t work out better: if in the USSR “ideologically unacceptable films” were not allowed to be filmed, and if sedition was found in an already filmed film, it was “put on the shelf” without being released, then in American cinema there is no such practice and cannot be … Speaking of “memos”, Putin most likely recalled the new standards of nomination for the Oscar in the main nomination – “Best Film”, published in September last year. But standards directed not to regulate the content of films, but to ensure that people from “underrepresented” groups of the population – women, national minorities, LGBT people, people with disabilities – get jobs in the film industry. Quotas have been set for such workers – both among actors and among those who do not appear in the frame. There is only one point about the content of the films: a film in the production of which these quotas are not met can also be nominated if representatives of such groups are in the center of its plot. This is understood very broadly: it is enough, for example, that the central character of the film is a woman. At the same time, there is no ideological censorship, no one interferes with the filming and distribution of films that do not meet the Oscar criteria, and it is not forbidden to nominate them for an Oscar, but not in the Best Film category.
About the story of the refusal to study Shakespeare at one of the British universities, “because English, as it turned out, is the language of the colonialists”, told in July Margarita Simonyan, apparently relying on a publication in a British tabloid Daily Mail… Newspaper in July 2021 wrotethat, according to information from an anonymous source, the Department of Literature and Theater at the University of East Anglia decided to abandon one of the modules in the course “Literature in History”, which includes the study of the historical chronicle of Shakespeare “Henry IV”, and replace it with a poem by the Canadian poetess of Trinidadian origin Marlene Nurby Philip. It is unknown if there was a message Daily Mail from the very beginning, a fake or the university decided to refuse to change the program under the influence of the publication, but in the program of the 2021/22 academic year, the module “Literature in History II”, which includes “Henry IV” and does not include the poem Philip, appears.
And in any case, the controversial decision of the leadership of one not the most famous university (182nd place in the world ranking Times Higher Education), even if it was, is not yet a basis for far-reaching conclusions.
3. On criminal liability for “foreign agents”
– Your concerns about foreign agents. <…> You said that it is not decided through the courts. And in the States, too, not through the courts, they summon the Ministry of Justice. Ask Russia Today what they are doing there. Do you know how tough? There is up to criminal responsibility. We don’t have that.
Putin is obviously unaware of the existence article 330.1 Of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Malicious evasion from the fulfillment of obligations stipulated by the legislation of the Russian Federation, in connection with the recognition of a person performing the functions of a foreign agent”:
1. Malicious evasion of obligations to submit documents required for inclusion in the register of non-profit organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent, or in registry unregistered public associations performing the functions of a foreign agent –

shall be punishable by a fine in an amount of up to 300 thousand rubles, or in the amount of the wage or salary, or any other income of the convicted person for a period of up to two years, or by compulsory works for a term of up to four hundred and eighty hours, or by compulsory labor for a term of up to five years, or by imprisonment for the same term.
4. About the Taliban “getting rid of radical elements”
– We are now seeing what is happening inside Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the presence of groups, including ISIS, remains there, there are already victims among the Taliban movement, which as a whole – we see these examples – is trying to somehow get rid of these radical elements.
“Getting rid of radical elements” in practice looks like this. For men in Afghanistan forbidden shave beards and visit barbershops, for women – study sports. In the country prohibited any music with the exception of songs of religious content without instrumental accompaniment; famous folk singer Fawad Andarabi executed… The day after Putin’s speech at Valdai, a message came that the Taliban beheaded volleyball player from the youth national team of Afghanistan; two other athletes of this team were able to leave the country, the rest are hiding.
Against this background, Putin speaks out in support of the removal of the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations.
5. About Europeans vaccinated with “Sputnik”
– Maybe there is, on the contrary, someone who receives some kind of Western vaccine, but I have already heard this turn of events many times: citizens of European countries come, here, with us, they get the Sputnik vaccination, and there they buy a certificate that they are vaccinated. ” Pfizer “. Seriously, this is what doctors say from European countries. It is believed that Sputnik is still more reliable and safer.
Such “vaccine tourism” is not possible. On the official website of the Moscow City Hall said:
“Vaccination against COVID-19 in Moscow is available only to foreigners who work or live here permanently.”
A similar procedure is valid in other regions of Russia. In St. Petersburg, applications for vaccination of foreigners serve only employing organizations and educational institutions. At the same time, only the Sputnik Light vaccine is available to foreigners, which is one of the two components of Sputnik V.
It obviously makes no sense to find out whether someone in Europe is buying fake vaccination certificates with drugs registered in the EU.
