The European Union introduces new sanctions against Belarus due to the situation with illegal migration, for which Brussels blames Lukashenka. About it reported in a statement following the summit of the leaders of the EU member states.
“The EU will continue to resist the ongoing hybrid attack organized by the Belarusian regime, including through the adoption of new restrictive measures against individuals and legal entities,” the document says.
The EU leaders also decided that “they will not tolerate attempts by third countries to use migrants for political purposes.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel called migration through Belarus a “hybrid threat” from Minsk. According to Merkel, Lukashenka “pursues the goal of using people as a political tool.”
The authors of the resolution condemned the “hybrid attacks on the EU borders”, promising to take appropriate retaliatory measures. The leaders also called on the European Commission to increase funding for border services.
Europe accuses Belarus of smuggling illegal migrants from Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries in the Middle East, which then try to cross the border with the European Union. Brussels believes that Lukashenka is using this as a tool to put pressure on the EU to lift the sanctions.
German authorities investigate the possible involvement of Lukashenka in the transportation of illegal migrants to Germany. According to the Federal Police of the Federal Republic of Germany, almost 4,000 foreigners have illegally moved from Belarus to Germany since August 2021.
Poland has introduced a state of emergency on the border with Belarus due to the situation with illegal migrants. Lithuania, Latvia and Poland declare an increase in the number of detained illegal migrants on the border with Belarus. Wherein exists numerous evidences that the Belarusian side is forcibly expelling illegal immigrants to the EU countries.
