The doctors’ council set up by the Georgian Ministry of Health to monitor the health of ex-President Mikhail Saakashvili, who went on a hunger strike in prison, recommended that he be hospitalized for “intensive observation.” About it writes Interfax with reference to doctor Zurab Pagava.
“We made a recommendation for hospitalization in order to avoid complications of Saakashvili’s health condition, which could deteriorate at any moment,” the agency reports.
The decision to hospitalize Saakashvili must be made by the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health and the Parliament of Georgia.
Saakashvili returned to Georgia on the eve of the municipal elections. This is his first visit to the country in eight years. On the evening of October 1, he was arrested and sent to prison, where he went on a hunger strike. On October 10, Saakashvili’s doctor reported that his state of health had deteriorated.
At home, five criminal cases were brought against Saakashvili, including abuse of authority and embezzlement. In two of them, he was previously found guilty in absentia. The ex-president called the sentences against himself fabricated, in particular, by the order of Vladimir Putin. The Georgian prosecutor’s office indicated that Saakashvili faces at least six years in prison, given the sentences already passed. Saakashvili led Georgia from 2004 to 2013.
