British Ambassador to Afghanistan Laurie Bristow has suspended his evacuation plans to help British and Afghans leave the country after the Taliban seizure of power. transfers Evening Standard.

British troops are helping to evacuate their citizens and locals from among their allies who want to leave the country. According to media reports, about 4,000 people need to be evacuated.

The first flight with evacuated British citizens arrived in the UK on Sunday, but the ambassador himself remained in Kabul. He helped arrange visas for Afghans.

“Our ambassador remains in Kabul and UK government officials continue to work to assist British citizens and our Afghan employees,” the UK Foreign Office said in a statement.

British troops were first deployed to Afghanistan in 2001. They were sent to the country after the 9/11 attacks on the United States. A total of 457 British soldiers were killed in the country.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said earlier that the soldiers have risked their lives for the past 20 years and need to get them out of Afghanistan.
