The investigation has toughened the qualification of the case of the oil spill near Novorossiysk. About it reported in the UK.
Now the case is being investigated on the fact of pollution of the marine environment, which caused significant damage to aquatic biological resources and the environment (part 2 of article 252 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The punishment under this article involves imprisonment for up to two years.
Let us remind you that on the evening of August 7, during the pumping of oil onto the Greek tanker Minerva Symphony (flag of Greece, home port of Piraeus), a salvo of oil occurred from an external loading device in the Yuzhnaya Ozereevka area near Novorossiysk. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which carried out the loading, said that the oil that got into the water spread over an area of 200 square meters, and the volume was “about 12 cubic meters.”
A week later, it turned out that the oil spill was 400 thousand times larger than the originator of the leak had reported. The area of the slick from the release of oil products was 80 km².
Alexey Knizhnikov, Head of the Environmental Policy Program of the WWF-Russia Fuel and Energy Complex reported The Insider that the scale of the leak was clear from the beginning, but now the situation has developed according to the worst scenario and has already caused billions of rubles in damage.
