Part of the royalties for Argentine striker Lionel Messi, who has signed a contract with French football club PSG, will be paid in cryptocurrency. About it reported press service of the club.

The club’s fan tokens were included in Messi’s “welcome package”, which is estimated at 25-30 million euros. PSG did not disclose the share of tokens in the package, but called the amount “significant”.

These are the $ PSG fan tokens that the football club distributes through the Socios.com platform. Their holders can trade them on the exchange, receive exclusive gifts and influence minor decisions related to the club. In particular, token owners can choose messages that are displayed on the locker room wall. Token holders also receive personalized video messages from club players.

According to PSG, the trading volume of fan tokens exceeded $ 1.2 billion after Messi’s signing and a few days before his arrival at the club.

Recall that Lionel Messi moved to the French PSG after he was unable to sign a new contract with the Barcelona football club, for which he played throughout his career. Messi left Berselon despite the fact that the player and the club reached an agreement and were about to sign a new contract. However, this did not happen due to financial and structural constraints approved by the regulations of the Spanish championship.

The reason for this situation is the financial problems of Barcelona and the strictness of the La Liga rules. The tight financial regulation of the championship suggests that the amount of spending should depend on the club’s earnings. The Catalans fail to comply with the regulations, so the club cannot register new contracts. So, in the 2019/2020 season, Barcelona spent 671 million euros on salaries, this season the club cannot spend more than 383 million euros.
