Some of the deputies are still in the parliament building, as the exits are blocked by protesters. The General Police Commissioner Renatas Pozhela arrived in the Seimas.
The protests in Vilnius began at 10:00, according to early police estimates, about 4.5 thousand people took part in them.
The protest was prompted by the government’s intention from September 13 to ban residents who have not vaccinated against coronavirus from using public transport, as well as visiting medical institutions and shops of a certain category and seeking contact services. These restrictions should not affect vaccinated and recently ill citizens, as well as holders of “passports of opportunity”, who must regularly confirm it by taking tests.
The government directly motivates its decision by the fact that such measures will stimulate the vaccination campaign. A vote on the initiative is scheduled for a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, August 11.
