The Lithuanian authorities refused to extradite Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to Belarus, informs RIA Novosti with reference to the Prosecutor General of Belarus Andrei Shved.
“Indeed, the documents have already arrived. I can officially confirm Lithuania’s refusal to extradite her. But in this refusal there is no motivation, on the basis of which they refused us. That is, there are no legal grounds, ”Shved said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel.
On March 5, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus sent an official request to Lithuania to extradite Tikhanovskaya to prosecute her.
Earlier, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that the countries did not intend to discuss the request for extradition of the Tikhanov authorities, adding that “sooner hell will be covered with ice than we will begin to discuss such a demand.”
“Lithuania was and will be a stone wall, where democratic forces persecuted by the regimes will find refuge. Thus, everyone who has found asylum in Lithuania can feel safe that they will not be handed over to the regimes – neither because of their struggle for democracy, nor for freedom of speech or religion, ”he explained.
On July 5, Tihanovskaya’s office in Lithuania received diplomatic status.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielus Landsbergis announced the recognition of the office as the official representation of the Belarusian democracy.
“This means that the Belarusian people now have an official representation in the EU countries,” said the message published on the Telegram channel of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.
I thank Lithuania for the tremendous support that the entire Belarusian people and I personally received over these months. Belarus is not Lukashenka, but the Belarusian people. And now it is officially recognized, “- said Tikhanovskaya herself.
