The US military carried out a special operation during which the leader of the Islamic State terrorist group Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed. About it says in a statement by US President Joe Biden released by the White House on Thursday.
“Last night, at my direction, the US military successfully conducted a counter-terrorism operation in northwest Syria to protect the American people and our allies and make the world a safer place,” the US president said in a statement.
None of the soldiers were injured. Biden promised to deliver an address to the American nation later.
How informs The New York Times, the operation was carried out by commandos parachuted from a helicopter, supported by helicopters, Reaper combat drones and ground attack aircraft. According to local rescuers, at least 13 people died during the raid.
As a senior US administration official told The New York Times, al-Qurayshi died at the very beginning of the operation, setting off the bomb. The explosion also killed members of his family, including women and children.
Former IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in Syria in 2019. He died in a similar way, blowing up a vest with explosives while storming the place where he was hiding – not far from the area of today’s special operation.
