US President Joe Biden demanded that the Taliban terrorist movement, which came to power in Afghanistan, release the American Mark Frerichs, who was kidnapped in this country in 2020. The American leader considers this step a condition of any further discussion of the recognition of the Taliban government. About it says in a White House statement.
“The Taliban must immediately release Mark before they can count on any consideration of their quest for legitimacy. This is non-negotiable,” Biden said.
In August 2020, the US State Department offered a reward of up to $5 million for information about the kidnapping of two Americans who had previously disappeared in Afghanistan. One of them is former military Mark Frerichs, who served in the US Navy. He stopped communicating in early February 2020 while in Kabul. Frerichs lived in Afghanistan for 10 years, working as an engineer in the construction industry.
The Taliban fighters seized power in Afghanistan in mid-August 2021. This happened after the US and its allies withdrew their troops from the country. This process was completed on August 30, before the same date evacuation both foreigners and Afghans cooperating with the US, EU and other NATO members.
On September 7, the Taliban announced that they had formed a new government in Afghanistan. However, no state has yet recognized its legitimacy. Representatives of Western countries noted that the recognition of the Taliban depends on whether the Taliban will respect human rights.
In words, the Taliban expressed their readiness to respect civil rights, but in reality, immediately after they came to power, various social groups, including women, faced restrictions on their rights. Thus, the Taliban abolished the Ministry of Women’s Affairs. In addition, they have banned music in cars and women without a hijab, it is forbidden to play live music at weddings in Afghanistan, and men and women are now required to celebrate in separate halls.
In Russia, the Taliban is listed as a terrorist movement, but the state media have been instructed to remove the label from reporting on the Taliban.
Former Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declaredthat the statements made by representatives of the Taliban movement during their talks in Moscow allow us to say that these are “sane people”. Russian President Vladimir Putin called for the unblocking of money in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan in European banks.
