Assistant to Dariga Nazarbayeva Zhanna Ermekova told to the Orda.kz publication that she contracted a coronavirus infection. She also added that Nazarbayeva was allegedly “at home in Almaty”.

It is still unknown where Nursultan Nazarbayev is located. The Sota edition, citing political scientist Arkady Dubnov, wrote that Nazarbayev may be in China. Dubnov also told the publication that one nephew of Nazarbayev, billionaire and patron of Kazakhstani religious radicals, Kairat Satybaldy, was arrested in Dubai, and the second, General and First Deputy Head of the NKB Samat Abish Satybaldy, was detained.

Later Beijing denied reports that Nazarbayev is in China.

Nursultan Nazarbayev and all his relatives, including the detainees, belong to the Shapyrashty clan of the Uysun Senior Union, which owned huge funds from the gas processing enterprises. According to the authors of the investigation, the grandson of Nazarbayev, Nurali Aliyev, the former head of the National Security Committee Karim Massimov and the son-in-law of Nursultan Nazarbayev, Timur Kulibayev, have residences in Dubai.
