“Smoke, coughs, tears, someone is vomiting.” The revolution in Almaty through the eyes of eyewitnesses

The first point we were taken to was the Almalinsky District Police Department (next to Lake Sairan), but there the police told their colleagues: “The UE is full, take it to another place.” Then we were taken to the Unitary Enterprise of the Auezovsky district. The employee who received us was surprised: “They only said to detain the men.” They began to take pictures of us, cell phones were taken away from everyone. They were assigned to the offices of the investigators, and they began to interrogate them.

All had the status of witnesses with the right to defense under Article 405. Many were fingerprinted after interrogation, but I refused this procedure. He also insisted on providing a lawyer and letting his parents call. But they turned me down.

All the detainees were checked on their mobile phones and searched for video recordings. After interrogations, we were all placed in one room. In addition to the three of us, there were six other detainees. All young people are between 20 and 30 years old. Many came to the rally for the first time, saying that they had come out to support the Zhanaozen people and all the protesters.

They did not want to let us go and formalize us, although several hours had passed since the moment of our arrest. At some point, the police began to move sharply and began to arm themselves, turned off the light. We realized that the rallies are still going on. I was released after midnight, and the others, too, one at a time.

On January 5, thousands of people walked to the central square of Almaty. They had no weapons, only slogans. Smartphones flashed in the windows of houses along Momyshuly Avenue. The protesters called on the residents of the houses to join the march. “Shal, ket!”, Which in Kazakh means: “Old man, get out!”, “Oyan Kazak” (“Awake, Kazakh”) – they shouted.

A police car was parked on Abai Avenue, an officer was hiding in it. Someone started pushing her, others stopped him. Everyone turned to Zheltoksan Avenue, named after the events of December 1986, when Kazakh youth protested against the Soviet regime. Explosions were heard, but people did not stop and moved on.

There were already thousands of people in Astana square, waving flags, gathered around the Independence Monument. SOBR fighters were standing in the distance, they had weapons and flash-bang grenades. Explosions were heard over the square. Around – clouds of smoke, coughing, tears, someone was vomiting.
