The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, his father Akhmat Kadyrov, as well as Aimani’s mother were declared “honored human rights defenders” of Chechnya. The corresponding order was signed by the regional ombudsman Nurdi Nukhazhiev, reported republican TV channel CHGTRK “Grozny”.
The Ombudsman noted the “enormous contribution” of the Kadyrov family “to ensuring human rights and strengthening statehood.” The head of Chechnya and his mother were not present at this speech.
The announcement came amid reports that dozens of relatives of Kadyrov’s critics have been kidnapped in Chechnya in recent weeks. Six people reported the disappearance of their family members – human rights activists Abubakar Yangulbaev, Mansur Sadulaev and Aslan Artsuev, as well as opposition Chechen bloggers Tumso Abdurakhmanov, Khasan Khalitov and Minkail Malizayev.
In the summer of 2020, the United States put Ramzan Kadyrov on the sanctions list for human rights violations, including torture and murder. The sanctions also apply to his wife Medni Kadyrova and his daughters Aishat and Karina Kadyrov.
The sanctions include a ban on entry into the country and business contacts, as well as an asset freeze in the United States. In addition to the United States, economic sanctions were also imposed on Kadyrov by some EU countries.
The eldest daughter of Kadyrov, Aishat, who holds the post of Minister of Culture of Chechnya, was earlier in December awarded medal “For the protection of human rights”. A similar medal (together with the honorary badge “Patriot of Russia”) was received by the Minister of Chechnya for National Policy, Foreign Relations, Press and Information Akhmed Dudayev. In April 2021, the US State Commission on International Religious Freedom recommended that the US authorities impose sanctions against Dudayev because of the “degrading video confessions” that appear on local state television and in the accounts of officials.
