Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced that he will resign

[ad_1]

Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg resigns. About it informs Reuters.

“I firmly believe that both positions – the head of government and the leader of the Austrian party with the most votes – should be filled by one person. Schallenberg said in a statement.

He added that he will step down as soon as his conservative People’s Party chooses a new leader. The previous one – ex-chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz – announced earlier today that he is leaving politics.

Recall the National Council of Austria approved the decision to deprive the former chancellor and leader of the Austrian People’s Party Sebastian Kurz of parliamentary immunity amid a corruption scandal in mid-November. Kurtz himself welcomed the move, saying that he did not consider himself guilty of illegal activities.

Sebastian Kurtz stated on his resignation on October 9 this year. Kurtz’s successor was the head of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Schallenberg. The ex-chancellor himself remained the head of the Austrian People’s Party.

Earlier, Kurz was accused of being involved in corruption schemes in 2016. The head of the Austrian government and nine other people were suspected of bribery of the media. On 6 October, the Vienna Economic Prosecutor’s Office conducted searches of the Chancellor’s office and the office of the ANP.
