Kremlin media are circulating Dmitry Peskov’s statement about the upcoming meeting between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin. RIA Novosti in an article entitled “Peskov told what topics Putin and Biden will discuss at the meeting” informs:
“Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov spoke about the topics of negotiations between Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden, which may take place by the end of this year.
“Naturally, Ukraine: there are many disputes over Ukraine. Naturally, around Ukraine there will also be what for us is provocative actions of NATO armed forces near our borders, which cannot leave us indifferent and causes concern, and most importantly, causes the need to take adequate measures, but in taking these measures, we act on our own own territory, “- said the representative of the Kremlin on the air of the First Channel.
He clarified that there are no specific dates for the meeting yet, but contacts are possible before the new year.
“But maybe later. It will depend on how the presidents’ schedules converge and what format they choose, ”added Peskov.
According to him, the video format is preferable for Moscow, but the heads of state will decide. “
The Kremlin media have reported more than once about the preparations for a meeting between Putin and US President Peskov. So, on October 20, Peskov statedthat the meeting between Putin and Biden this year “in one format or another is quite real.”
October 24 Peskov in the program of the channel “Russia 1” “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin “announced that there is an understanding: the contact should take place in the foreseeable future (without specifying, however, on whose side this understanding is). “Parliamentary newspaper” filed it is under the headline “The Kremlin told when the next meeting of Putin and Biden could take place.”
November 1 RIA Novosti with reference to Sergey Lavrov reportedthat “the organization of contacts between the leaders of Russia and the United States in the foreseeable future was discussed,” and the general director of the Russian Council on International Affairs, Andrei Kortunov, noted that the meeting had to be prepared and a lot of work had to be done.
On November 9, Peskov said that the Kremlin and the White House understand that the meeting is necessary, there are no exact dates yet. On the website “Vesti” this news appeared under the headline “Peskov spoke about the new meeting between Putin and Biden.”
November 10 “Kommersant”, referring to some “knowledgeable sources”, reported:
“According to sources of Kommersant who are aware of the course of negotiations between Moscow and Washington, the preliminary schedule of contacts between Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden looks like this: an online conversation until the end of this year, and then a face-to-face meeting at the beginning of next.”
This message picked up RIA Novosti, providing its publication with the headline “Putin and Biden may meet early next year, media reports.”
Now Peskov is already talking about the issues that are scheduled to be discussed at a future meeting, although its date has not yet been set. And what does the international press say about all this?
Reuters The 20th of October published a post titled “Kremlin: Putin-Biden Meeting Possible Before End Of This Year.” Its publication dated November 10 titled “Kommersant: Biden and Putin can personally negotiate in early 2022.” Article in Foreign Policy from 18 November called “The Kremlin says a second meeting between Biden and Putin is in preparation.” Message Euronews from November 19 titled “The Kremlin says the security phone call was part of preparations for new talks between Putin and Biden.” That is, all Western publications refer to Russian sources.
So far, there has been only one message directly from the White House. On November 8, Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at a press briefing, answering a question from one of the journalists about the possibility of a meeting between Biden and Putin before the end of the year, said:
“I have nothing to say about any future meeting.”
So, to all appearances, preparations for the summit are being conducted somewhat asymmetrically.
