In the province of Aswan in southern Egypt, three people died and about 450 were injured by scorpion bites. About it writes BBC citing a spokesman for the country’s health ministry. Showers and hail, extremely rare in these latitudes, fell on Aswan, five houses were destroyed. The disaster also affected a number of other southern provinces of the country.
The Ministry of Health explained that because of the downpours, the scorpion holes were damaged, and therefore the animals left them and ended up close to residential buildings.
Medical centers in villages near mountains and deserts received additional doses of the antidote. Some health workers have switched from vaccinating the population to helping victims of scorpion bites. People are encouraged to stay at home and avoid areas where there are many trees that may contain scorpions.
Egypt is home to black fat-tailed scorpions, which are considered one of the deadliest in the world. Their venom can kill a person in less than an hour.
