The condition of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike for 36 days, is deteriorating: according to Iya Barateli, editor of the News Georgia news agency, he has gaps in his memory, he loses his logical connection, he cannot write a letter. Barateli noted that the Georgian authorities need to urgently take action. “This is a dead end. Keeping Saakashvili in prison is completely unprofitable for the authorities, because he will continue to be an event and a serious factor of destabilization for them. Rallies will continue, this is a very big incentive for the opposition. Many went on hunger strike – someone near the prison, someone near the parliament. ” According to Barateli, the opposition has begun to hold rallies in support of the ex-president in the regions. Also on November 6, a large-scale action is planned in Tbilisi.
Earlier, a hunger strike was announced by the head of the opposition party “Droa” Elena Khoshtaria. She said that she would go on a hunger strike right in the building until Saakashvili was taken to a civilian clinic.
Earlier it became known that Saakashvili’s lawyers announced the need for his urgent hospitalization in a civilian clinic in connection with the deteriorating health condition, undermined by the ongoing hunger strike. On November 3, his personal doctor Nikoloz Kipshidze met with the arrested Saakashvili at the Rustavi penitentiary. He confirmed that the ex-president’s condition is deteriorating. The ex-president told the human rights commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Lyudmila Denisova that he was afraid of being transferred to a prison hospital, as he believed that he would be killed there.
According to the ombudsman, Saakashvili receives medication support in the form of 30 tablets a day and drinks up to 7 liters of water a day. He is also given two drips daily.
