French actress Brigitte Bardot was fined for speaking to the residents of Reunion, which the court considered an insult on the basis of race. About it informs AFP.
According to the agency, in 2019, Bardot, on behalf of her own animal welfare fund, sent a letter to Reunion prefect Amaury de Saint-Quentin. In it, she called the indigenous people of the island “aborigines who have preserved the genes of savages.” For this phrase, the Saint-Denis court sentenced the 87-year-old actress to a fine of € 20,000.
The press secretary of the actress Bruno Jacquelin was fined € 4,000 for complicity in public insults. At Bardo’s request, he conveyed her message to several media outlets, including AFP.
The letter said that Bardot received many appeals condemning the barbarism that the inhabitants of Réunion show towards animals. The actress called Reunion “an island of the devil with a degenerate population, still saturated <...> with barbaric traditions.”
The then Foreign Minister Annick Girardin addressed Brigitte Bardot with an open letter, in which she stated that “racism is not an opinion, it is a crime.” Subsequently, MP Jean-Hugues Rathenon, the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism, the Movement Against Racism and for Friendship Among Peoples, the anti-racist movement SOS Racisme, the League for Human Rights, and Hindu religious associations have made complaints against the actress.
Soon, legal proceedings began against Bardo. According to the prosecutor, the actress’s statements were “offensive and traumatic.” The prosecution demanded a fine of € 25,000 for Bardot. At the hearing, the actress apologized to the audience and stated that her statements were caused by concern about the “tragic fate” of the animals on the island.
