A court in Riga sentenced journalist and political activist Yuri Alekseev to a year and two months in prison for inciting hatred. About it informs Delphi.
A criminal case against Alekseev was initiated in 2017. In addition to inciting national, ethnic or racial hatred, the journalist was accused of possessing pistol cartridges and distributing child pornography.
At the trial, Alekseev argued that he was accused of comments with calls to “kill Latvians”, which he did not write. According to him, the investigator planted the cartridges on him, and presented photographs of his bathing children as child pornography. The journalist also said that the judge did not take into account the arguments of his lawyer, and the whole process was politically motivated.
Alekseev is one of the most prominent Russian-speaking journalists and editors in Latvia. In the 1990s and 2000s, he worked as the chief editor of the publications Business & Baltia, Kommersant Baltic, Business.lv. In 2005-2009 he was a deputy of the Riga City Council from the association “For Human Rights in United Latvia”.
