116 people died during the riots in the prison of the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, at least five of them were beheaded. About it informs AP.
According to the agency, about 400 police officers were sent to quell the riots. Two security officials were injured.
Riots in an Ecuadorian prison began on September 28, after prisoners from one wing of the prison entered the other wing and attacked the people who were there. The cause of the riots was the conflict between the Los Lobos and Los Choneros gangs. Both groups are believed to be associated with international drug cartels.
Because of the riots in Guayaquil, the authorities introduced an emergency regime in all prisons in Ecuador. In their opinion, the incident is due to the lack of staff in the penitentiary institutions and their overcrowding. In July this year, President Guillermo Lasso noted that the prison occupancy rate was exceeded by 30%.
