The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan said on Saturday that two people have died after being vaccinated against COVID-19 using a Moderna development. The men who died this month were in their 30s. Their death occurred a few days after the drug was administered. At first, both patients developed a fever, and two days later they died.
The vaccines used in these cases were three-batch vaccines, which the Japanese authorities imposed a temporary ban on Thursday. The exact causes of death of men are being established, transfers Reuters.
Currently, Japan has “frozen” the use of 1.63 million doses of Moderna vaccine, which have arrived at 863 vaccination centers across the country. The local distributor, Takeda Pharmaceutical, had received reports a week earlier that some contaminants had been found in the vaccine doses from this batch.
The Japanese Ministry of Health suggested that the impurities could be metal particles as they react to a magnetic field. However, at that time, there were no reports of any adverse reactions in those vaccinated with Moderna drugs.
According to the Kyodo agency, the contaminated vaccines were produced in Spain, the size of unknown particles reaches several millimeters. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga expressed the opinion that this incident will not have much impact on the country’s vaccination, transfers TASS.
Takeda Pharmaceutical emphasizes that no link has been found between the two male deaths and vaccinations. “We currently have no evidence that these deaths are caused by the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. It is important to conduct an official investigation to determine if there is any connection, ”the company said.
The Japanese government made a similar announcement, adding that the suspension of the use of several batches of Moderna vaccine is only a precautionary measure. According to a health ministry official, there is no evidence that the doses of the vaccine given to the two men contained any impurities.
Fumi Sakamoto, an infectious disease doctor at a hospital in Tokyo, believes that there is only a temporary connection between vaccinations and the death of two patients. “There are many factors unknown to us, so no conclusions can be drawn about these two cases,” she explained.
More than 124 million coronavirus vaccinations have been made in Japan. 44% of the population is already fully vaccinated. As of August 8, 991 people have died in the country after being given the Pfizer vaccine and 11 after being vaccinated with Moderna products. However, no direct link has been established between vaccination and patient deaths.
