European Union recognizes Taliban victory, but not its control over Afghanistan

[ad_1]

The European Union recognizes that the Taliban terrorist movement has won the war, therefore it considers it necessary to start a dialogue with the new authorities of Afghanistan in order to prevent humanitarian and migration crises. This was stated on Tuesday by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell following an emergency video conference of EU foreign ministers on Afghanistan. At the same time, he stressed that we are not talking about the recognition of the new authorities, transfers TASS.

The Taliban won the war, so we need to talk to the new authorities in Kabul, whoever they are, to prevent migration and humanitarian crises, ”he said. “It’s about dialogue, not about recognizing the Taliban’s power.

The EU’s priority in Afghanistan now is the evacuation of its personnel and Afghan citizens who have worked with EU countries, Borrell said. The EU will also support the countries of the region that face the influx of refugees from Afghanistan, drug trafficking, and “regional instability.”

Also, the European Union, he said, is ready to continue to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan without preconditions. »The people of Afghanistan are in dire need of humanitarian aid, humanitarian aid is provided in spite of everything. This does not apply to economic aid, its allocation will depend on the actions of the new authorities in Afghanistan, ”stressed Josep Borrell.

In a statement, published after an emergency meeting of EU diplomats on Tuesday, it also emphasizes the importance of maintaining and developing the political, economic and social gains that Afghans have enjoyed over the past 20 years. We are talking about the rights of women, children, ethnic and other minorities, access to education and health care. “Afghanistan, which has signed the UN Charter, must support and promote the values, rights and principles enshrined in it, as well as comply with its international obligations,” the EU stressed. “Cooperation with any future Afghan government will depend on a peaceful and comprehensive settlement, respect for the fundamental rights of all Afghans, including women, youth and minorities, as well as adherence to Afghanistan’s international commitments, a commitment to fighting corruption and preventing terrorist organizations from using Afghanistan’s territory.”

The European Union called on the Taliban to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law in all circumstances.
