US President Joe Biden said he did not regret the decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan. He said this in his address, speaking at the White House, reports The New York Times.
“I stand firm on my decision,” the American leader said.
According to him, the goal of the US operation in Afghanistan was to prevent terrorist attacks and this goal has been achieved. Refusal to withdraw troops from Afghanistan would mean an escalation of the conflict and would require the participation of thousands of additional troops.
Biden noted that the US military should not die in a war that Afghan forces do not want to wage. The United States will continue to support the Afghan people, encourage regional diplomacy, and defend human rights, Biden added.
