In St. Petersburg, the police detained a 31-year-old native of Izhevsk, who, according to law enforcement officers, hung a poster on a transformer box in Pushkar Garden with a picture of Russian journalists, politicians and human rights activists killed between 2006 and 2015. According to the newspaper, the man was arrested about nine hours after the police learned about the posted poster. According to preliminary information, the detainee acknowledged the authorship of the banner. Fontanka notes that the police questioned him and released him.
The police intend to transfer the information received to the city committee on law and order. In the actions of the native of Izhevsk they saw an administrative offense, he faces a fine from three to five thousand rubles.
A banner depicting the killed public figures was displayed on July 15 at the transformer box in Pushkar Garden. The banner featured a stylized cover of The Beatles’ Revolver album, but instead of soloists, it featured lawyer Stanislav Markelov, Novaya Gazeta journalists Anna Politkovskaya and Anastasia Baburova, politician Boris Nemtsov and human rights activist Natalya Estemirova. Next to the portraits there was an inscription “Heroes of the days gone by”.
In April of this year, graffiti with the image of Alexei Navalny, who folded his fingers in the shape of a heart, appeared on the same transformer booth. Nearby was the inscription “A Hero of the New Time”. The police immediately arrived at the scene, and the investigator took paint samples, after which the employees of the municipal services painted over the graffiti.
Later, the police of the Petrogradsky district of St. Petersburg opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Art. 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (vandalism committed by a group of persons, as well as for reasons of political, ideological, racial, national or religious hatred or enmity).
