Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev lost to Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open tournament in Melbourne.
Nadal lost the first two sets of the match with a score of 2:6, 6:7 (5:7), but then turned the tide of the match and won two games with the same score of 6:4. In the final set, the Spaniard also prevailed – 7:5, transmits RBC. The meeting lasted over five hours.
With the win, Nadal set the record as he won the 21st Grand Slam title of his career.
For Daniil, this is the fourth Grand Slam final. He reached the finals at the US Open twice (in 2019 and 2021) and twice at the Australian Open (in 2021 and 2022). Last year Medvedev won in the final.
During the game with Nadal, Medvedev was visibly nervous. The Russian was angered by the fans who were screaming. During pauses, the Russian tennis player several times asked the referee to reprimand the audience and added: “They (fans) are idiots. No brains. Probably everything in their life must be very bad, right?
Medvedev could become the first racket of the world if he won the Australian Open after calculating the rating points for the tournament. The Russian would overtake Novak Djokovic, who was previously deported from Australia and could not defend his ranking points won in Melbourne last year. Before being deported, Djokovic’s visa was canceled due to the fact that he had not been vaccinated against the coronavirus.
The Grand Slam tournament series is the most prestigious in tennis and combines four tournaments: the Australian Open (Australian Open), France (Roland Garros) and the United States (US Open), as well as the Wimblend tournament in the UK. The winner of each of the Grand Slam tournaments receives 2000 ranking points. The total prize pool of the Australian Open 2022 is almost $54 million.
