On January 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg. This was accompanied by the introduction of special security measures. The territory of the cemetery and its environs were targeted by snipers. In addition, the sanitary treatment of snowdrifts was carried out. About this “Novaya Gazeta” told employee of the Piskarevsky memorial complex Margarita Nikolaeva.
According to her, what is happening on January 27 at the cemetery was different from other similar ceremonies with the participation of high-ranking officials: Putin “was walking completely alone”, and the people responsible for the security of the president were “sealing up video cameras and processing snowdrifts.”
“About half an hour (before Putin appeared), a special vehicle arrived, people got out, treated the snowdrifts with something and left. Snow has never been processed before,” Nikolayeva explained.
She confirmed that the previously published photo with snipers on the roof of the building on the territory of the memorial complex was not a fake. “I saw them with my own eyes on the roof of the pavilion (on the right, if you stand with your back to Nepokorennyh Avenue). In previous years, they were also there,” said an employee of the complex.
The snipers were aiming towards the sculpture of the Motherland, where a wreath-laying ceremony was taking place.
Margarita Nikolaeva added that “the wreath-bearers were brought from Moscow, where they were in quarantine for two weeks.” According to her, since early morning public transport has ceased to stop at the cemetery.
The ceremony on January 27 at the Piskarevsky cemetery was timed to coincide with the 78th anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad. Eyewitnesses said that in the morning the passage to the cemetery was open, but around noon, the OMON officers asked visitors to leave the territory. Elderly people complained that they were not allowed to go to the cemetery where they were going to lay flowers. The crowd gathered at the entrance to the cemetery included children, as well as 89 year old blockade. At that moment, everyone was waiting for Putin’s arrival. Margarita Nikolaeva confirmed that “many stood for about two hours in the cold.”
