In the Kaluga region, a criminal case was opened due to the death of a prisoner in the medical unit of correctional colony No. 3, located in the village of Tovarkovo, reported on the website of the regional department of the Investigative Committee.

Formerly Directorate of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Kaluga Region reportedthat on January 22 in the medical unit of IK-3 there was a conflict between the convicts, as a result of which one of them was injured. According to the Federal Penitentiary Service, the man received medical assistance, but the ambulance pronounced him dead. The cause of the conflict, according to the Federal Penitentiary Service, was “personal hostility.”

Human rights activists Gulagu.net declaredthat 34-year-old Mikhail Smirnova died on the night of January 22, earlier three prisoners beat him and tried to rape him. As human rights activists write, Smirnov openly spoke out against beatings and torture in the colony, carried out on behalf of the head of IK-3, Pavel Ryzhenkov.
