Poet Anatoly Naiman dies at 86

Poet, translator and essayist Anatoly Naiman has died at the age of 85. About it on Facebook reported his daughter, journalist Anna Narinskaya.

January 17 to the poet got sick during a presentation on Osip Mandelstam at a conference of the Higher School of Economics. He was hospitalized with a stroke.

Nyman was born in 1936 in St. Petersburg. He began writing poetry in the 1950s. Initially, they were distributed in samizdat, in the USSR they began to be published only during perestroika.

During the Soviet years, Nyman also worked as a translator and was the literary secretary of the poetess Anna Akhmatova in the last years of her life. Subsequently, he published his memoirs about her, which were called “Stories about Anna Akhmatova.”
