In Nizhny Novgorod, the Chechen security forces came to the parents of the lawyer of the “Committee against Torture” Abubakar Yangulbaev. They kidnapped former federal judge Saydi Yangulbaev and his wife. At the end of December, Abubakar Yangulbaev reported the disappearance of more than 20 of his relatives in Chechnya.
The security forces showed Yangulbaev’s lawyer the decision to bring the former judge and his wife to Chechnya as witnesses, writes “Committee Against Torture”. According to him, the security forces beat the spouses and hit the lawyer in the face. Zarema Yangulbayeva was taken out of the apartment by 7-8 security officials. She passed out on the stairs. Yangulbayeva suffers from diabetes and may have coronavirus.
One of those who came to the Yangulbaevs’ apartment was Adam Madigov, a police major from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Chechen Interior Ministry.
Shortly before the New Year, Abubakar Yangulbaev’s apartment in Pyatigorsk was searched, after which he interrogated police officers. On December 25 he informed about the kidnapping of 37 of his relatives in Chechnya. They were later released, but as of January 19, at least two people were still abducted.
“The detentions took place at night, with the use of violence, some were beaten, not allowed to dress, they put bags on their heads. Everything, as during the deportation in 1944. Just before the New Year, everyone was kidnapped and kept not free,” Yangulbaev said.
Within three days, apart from Yangulbaev, five more people told about the abductions of relatives in Chechnya. On December 22, the Chechen blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov reported the disappearance of his relatives. The next day blogger Minkail Malizaev made a similar statement. He said that his loved ones were kidnapped and tortured. Malizaev himself was sent nude photographs of his mother and wife. Investigator Khristo Grozev discovered that the phone number from which one of the threatening messages was sent belongs to a 28-year-old Russian SOBR officer who reports personally to Kadyrov in Chechnya.
Relatives of the founder of the Vayfond human rights association, which helps Chechen refugees in Europe, Mansur Sadulaev, were also abducted.
On December 24, Aslan Artsuev, an activist and director of the human rights organization Human Rights Center Ichkeria, announced the abduction of relatives by Chechen security forces. According to Artsuev, the security forces came to his cousins Khizir Abdulmuslimov and Selim Aslakhanov, uncle Sultan Artsuev and second cousin Musa Artsuev. They were detained on the evening of December 22 in the villages of Katar-Yurt and Achkhoy-Martan. The activist had previously left Chechnya for Germany. He believes that his relatives were detained because he criticized Ramzan Kadyrov and Vladimir Putin.
