The European Court of Human Rights awarded 29-year-old activist Dmitry Karuev from Cheboksary, who spat on a portrait of Putin, compensation in the amount of 12.4 thousand euros (1.1 million rubles). About it informs Radio Liberty with a link to the ECtHR website. The Strasbourg court found that the Russian authorities had violated Karuev’s right to freedom of expression.
Karuev was arrested in May 2012 for fifteen days for disorderly conduct. Together with another member of the Chuvash branch of the unregistered Other Russia party, they organized an action in the form of Putin’s symbolic “funeral” in front of the Government House of the Chuvash Republic. The activists laid a portrait of Putin with the dates 1952-2012, tied with a white ribbon, placed two carnations and a glass of vodka with bread in front of him, after which Dmitry Karuev spat on the portrait.
The court considered that Karuev’s actions “demonstrated blatant disrespect for society”, equating Karuev’s disrespect for the President of the Russian Federation to this.
Russia leads in the number of applications to the ECtHR. Court awarded compensations to Russian citizens amounting to several tens of thousands of euros, including in cases of extrajudicial killings in the North Caucasus, torture by security forces and domestic violence.
