European lawmakers have elected Malta’s Roberta Metsola as President of the European Parliament despite criticism of her stance on abortion. About it informs Agence France Presse.
Metsola won 458 votes and became the third woman to head the European Parliament. Since January 11, she has acted as interim chairman in connection with the death of the former chairman of parliament, David Sassoli.
Roberta Metsola is the mother of four children. She describes herself as an advocate for women’s rights and the LGBTQ+ community. However, Metsola has been heavily criticized by left-wing and green groups in the European Parliament for supporting a ban on abortion. In Malta, which Metsola represents, abortion is illegal, and Metsola voted against the adoption of a report calling on European Union member states to provide safe access to abortion procedures.
Metsola’s candidacy was supported by the largest factions. On the day of the election, she turned 43 years old. Roberta Metsola will head the European Parliament until mid-2024.
