Apple was the first foreign company to open a personal account on the Roskomnadzor website. This is required by the Russian “landing law” for foreign companies. At the same time, Apple did not open an office in Russia, and also did not make a request form on the site, as required by the RKN.
Also, representatives of the service for creating short videos Likee announced the filing of an application for opening a personal account on the website of the department.
As Vladislav Zdolnikov, the author of the IT and SORM Telegram channel, explained to The Insider, the opening of Apple’s personal account on the RKN website shows the company’s increasing interaction with the Russian authorities. This will lead to the fact that law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation will receive even more data about Russian users.
“This means that Apple’s existing fairly close interaction with the Russian state is getting even tighter,” Zdolnikov says. – We see this in practice – Navalny’s application on “smart voting” was blocked without explanation, it has not yet been unblocked. Now this interaction is documented. For Russian Apple users, this means that even more of their personal data will be transferred to the state, the company will remove more content at the request of government agencies. Using Apple technology in Russia is becoming less and less safe. All these wonderful security protocols and encryption ends exactly where the interests of the intelligence agencies arise, which Apple is ready to satisfy.
For example, users’ photos and videos are stored in iCloud in the clear, and Apple may share this information. It can transfer metadata – which account and from which phone a person comes in, who specifically used it. Encryption saves from third parties, but not states.”
