Danish government informs about the increasing espionage activity on the part of Russia, China, Iran and some other countries in the Arctic region.
“The threat comes from foreign intelligence agencies that operate against Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands,” Anders Henriksen, head of Danish counterintelligence, said in a report.
In particular, the report reports on an incident that occurred back in 2019, when a fake letter was allegedly sent to one of the US senators, in which the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greenland wrote about the preparation of a referendum on the independence of the island from Denmark.
“Most likely, this letter was fabricated and distributed on the Internet by Russian agents of influence who wanted to create confusion and provoke a conflict between Greenland, Denmark and the United States,” the report says.
According to Reuters, the Russian embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Moscow has ridiculed recent accusations of espionage by the West,” the agency also notes.
