The Greek police have detained a 48-year-old native of Georgia who has Greek citizenship. He is suspected of organizing a high-profile murder 25 years ago. The killer Alexander Solonik and his girlfriend, a fashion model and former beauty queen Svetlana Kotova, became victims of the attack in the Athenian suburb of Varibobi.
The murder suspect was arrested on 10 January at Macedonia International Airport in Thessaloniki. He flew there from Cyprus, writes Kathimerini newspaper. The suspect has been on the wanted list since 2005.
Alexander Solonik is one of the most famous Russian killers of the 1990s. Before becoming a hired killer, Solonik worked for some time in the police, and then received a prison sentence for a series of rapes.
In the 90s, he became a “regular killer” of the “Kurgan” criminal group. According to the investigation, he has more than twenty murders of crime bosses on his account. He was also charged with the murder of four police officers. Solonik escaped from custody three times, including from the Moscow SIZO Matrosskaya Tishina.
Since 1995, he has lived in Greece under the name of Vladimir Kesov, together with 19-year-old winner of the Miss Russia 1996 contest, Svetlana Kotova.
On February 2, 1997, 37-year-old Solonik was found strangled. According to Greek investigators, his acquaintances, with whom Solonik lived in villas in the resort area of Lagonisi, could have killed him. In May 1997, near the villa where Solonik was staying, a suitcase with Kotova’s dismembered body was found buried in the ground. According to the conclusions of the examination, she was also strangled with a stranglehold.
In 2005, members of the “Orekhovskaya” organized criminal group Andrei Gusev, Andrei Filippov and Alexander Pustovalov, involved in this crime, received prison terms in Moscow. A year later, Andrei Pylev, one of the leaders of the Orekhovo-Medvedkovo group, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for organizing several crimes, including the murders of Solonik and Kotova.
Another accomplice in Solonik’s murder, Sergei Butorin, was arrested in Spain, extradited to the Russian Federation, and in 2011 sentenced to life imprisonment.
