The youngest daughter of the former president of Kazakhstan, Aliya Nazarbayeva, withdrew more than $ 300 million from the country. These funds were used to purchase a mansion in the British capital and a private jet, writes The Telegraph.
Information about Nazarbayeva’s assets became known after her conflict with two former financial managers, against whom she filed a lawsuit in a British court, accused of fraud and misappropriation of funds. Nazarbayeva demanded £ 165 million (almost $ 224 million) from the defendants. The claim was settled by agreement of the parties.
Aliya Nazarbayeva told one of the financial managers that in 2006 she received about $ 325 million by selling her stakes in a certain business. $ 312 million was withdrawn from Kazakhstan, because Nazarbayeva decided that it was dangerous for her to keep funds in her homeland, it follows from court documents. Financial consultants advised Nazarbayeva to transfer money through offshore companies in Liechtenstein and the Virgin Islands. Nazarbayeva also invested $ 108 million in the Swiss private bank CBH Bank in exchange for a 51 percent stake.
Later, Nazarbayeva made a number of major purchases. In particular, she bought a house in London for £ 8.75 million in order to obtain a residence permit in the UK. She also bought real estate in Dubai for $ 14 million and a Bombardier Challenger aircraft for £ 18 million.
In 2019, the property of the eldest daughter of ex-President of Kazakhstan Dariga Nazarbayeva and her son Nurali Aliyev was arrested in London, including a mansion with an underground pool and a cinema on one of the country’s most expensive streets, Bishops Avenue. The cost of real estate exceeded $ 100 million. According to law enforcement agencies, it was bought with the criminal proceeds of Rakhat Aliyev, the former spouse of Dariga Nazarbayeva. But the court found it unproven and removed the arrest from the assets.
Rakhat Aliyev fell into disgrace in the early 2000s, left Kazakhstan and was convicted in absentia. He was then arrested in Austria on charges of killing two bankers, and in 2015 found dead in a prison cell. On the day of his death, Aliyev had to testify against two former inmates who allegedly threatened to kill him. Forensic experts concluded that Aliyev had committed suicide.
In the early days of 2022, protests began in Kazakhstan over an increase in fuel prices. One of the protesters’ slogans was “Shal, ket!” (“Old man, go away!”). It is believed that he was directed against the former President of the country, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who retained significant powers.
Amid protests, the country’s current president, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, removed Nazarbayev from his most important post, the chairman of the Kazakhstan Security Council. There were rumors that Nazarbayev and his relatives, accused of corruption, had left Kazakhstan. But in the press service of the ex-president claimthat he remains at home.
