In California, in a hospital in Stockton, millionaire Robert Durst died, serving a life sentence for the murder of his close friend Susan Berman, which he himself accidentally confessed to during the filming of a documentary. About it informs The New York Times.
Durst was brought to the hospital recently when the prisoner became ill. Already in the medical institution, the convict’s heart stopped, and the resuscitation actions did not give any results.
Durst was sentenced to life in prison in October 2021, but the jury found him guilty back in September.
This is a 21-year-old criminal case. In 2000, a close friend of Durst’s, Susan Berman, was found in her own house – the girl had a broken head. The woman died shortly before the conversation with the police, which they planned to hold in connection with the case of the disappearance of Durst’s wife Kathleen. The millionaire’s wife disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1982, she was later pronounced dead.
Later, the millionaire accidentally confessed to the murder of Berman while filming an HBO documentary about his life. Having gone to the bathroom, he, believing that he had already taken off the microphone worn by the operator, said: “Well, that’s all. You got caught. What I’ve done? Killed them all, of course. ” The film crew took this tape to the police.
According to the prosecution, Durst told Berman that he had killed his wife, after which he decided to get rid of her too. Throughout the investigation, Durst was constantly confused in his testimony.
Earlier, Durst confessed to another murder – his neighbor Morris Black, from whose body he got rid of, resorting to dismemberment. Durst calmly threw the remains of the corpse into the sea. But then the defense of the millionaire proved that Durst was forced to resort to self-defense, and he was acquitted.
Robeth Durst is the son of a major New York real estate dealer Seymour Durst. According to the 2020 Forbes ranking, the Durst family was ranked 47th among the richest people in the world.
