Russian units from the CSTO peacekeeping forces will remain in Kazakhstan until the situation is completely stabilized, stated Commander of the Russian Airborne Forces, Colonel General Andrei Serdyukov.
According to him, the units of the “peacekeeping forces” carry out tasks for the protection of “military, state and socially significant objects in the city of Alma-Ata and adjacent areas.” He added that the deployment of military forces on the territory of Kazakhstan has already been completed.
Serdyukov also said that the Russian military aviation will take out from Kazakhstan everyone who wants to return home after a vacation or stay with relatives. For these purposes, planes have already been organized. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, this is almost 1,600 people.
At the same time, the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic, Lieutenant-General Sultan Gamaletdinov said that the “counter-terrorist operation” in the country will be completed only with the complete destruction of the “terrorists”.
According to official data from the Russian Ministry of Defense, units of the 45th separate brigade of the Russian Airborne Forces special forces, the 98th airborne division and the 31st separate airborne assault brigade have been sent to Kazakhstan as part of the CSTO contingent.
Former President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Zhomart Tokayevstated, which considers the appeal to the partners of the Collective Security Treaty Organization “appropriate and timely.” According to him, “terrorist gangs” are taking control of large infrastructure facilities in the country.
“Relying on the collective security treaty, today I turned to the heads of the CSTO states to help Kazakhstan overcome this terrorist threat. In fact, this is no longer a threat, it is an undermining of the integrity of the state and, most importantly, an attack on our citizens, who ask me, as the head of state, to urgently help them, ”he said.
Currently, the CSTO includes six states – Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
Earlier it was reported that Russia sent 3,000 troops to Kazakhstan, Belarus – 500, Tajikistan – 200, and Armenia – 70.
