The first Russian units from the CSTO peacekeeping forces arrived in Kazakhstan, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Also, units of the 45th separate brigade of the special forces of the Russian Airborne Forces, Ivanovo and Ulyanovsk formations of the Airborne Forces, are sent to Kazakhstan as part of the CSTO forces, RIA Novosti specifies.
Former President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev stated, which considers the appeal to the partners of the Collective Security Treaty Organization “appropriate and timely.” According to him, “terrorist gangs” are taking control of large infrastructure facilities in the country.
“Relying on the collective security treaty, today I turned to the heads of the CSTO states to help Kazakhstan overcome this terrorist threat. In fact, this is no longer a threat, it is an undermining of the integrity of the state and, most importantly, an attack on our citizens, who ask me, as the head of state, to urgently help them, ”he said.
Currently, the CSTO includes six states – Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
For the fifth day in Kazakhstan, protests caused by a sharp rise in prices for liquefied gas have not abated. The rallies began on January 2 in Zhanaozen, later the residents of the city were supported in many other settlements. By the evening of January 4, protests, to which the majority of people come out with political demands, gripped most of the country.
