The Sovetsky District Court of Tomsk sentenced the mayor of the city, Ivan Klein, to 2 years in a general regime colony and ordered him to be sent to a pre-trial detention center until the decision came into legal force. About it informs “Taiga.info”.
How writes the local TV channel TV2, Tomsk residents gathered at the courthouse, crying and chanting “Return the mayor to Tomsk!” In addition, the publication notes that, according to preliminary estimates, taking into account the period of house arrest, Ivan Klein will spend about 10 months in the colony.
The court found Klein guilty of abuse of power and illegal business. According to the court, he committed three corruption crimes and used his official position. During the meeting, the court reclassified Klein’s actions on the first two episodes of the criminal case from Part 2 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of office) on part 2 of Art. 285 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of office).
Ivan Klein was detained in the workplace on November 13, 2020. In the management of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, he was charged with abuse of office in the interests of the Tomskoe Pivo company, of which he is the main shareholder.
According to the investigation, in 2016, the mayor instructed the head of the department of urban planning and architecture to enter false information into the Geocad geographic information system that the enterprise has a 300-meter sanitary protection zone. This became the basis for the developer’s refusal to build residential high-rises there.
Later became knownthat the Kirovsky District Court of Tomsk temporarily removed Klein from the post of mayor of Tomsk.
In March of this year, the Soviet District Court of Tomsk translated Mayor of the city Ivan Klein from jail under house arrest for six months. At that time, he was at the Oncology Research Institute, where, shortly before that, he underwent an operation to remove a tumor of the kidney and adrenal gland.
December 27, in his last word, Klein did not recognize guilt and asked him to acquit.
“I consider all three episodes, Your Honor, to be fabricated with the help of false witnesses,” Klein emphasized. He also asked the judge to make a fair decision and give him the opportunity to “continue serving the Tomsk citizens”.
Ivan Klein was elected mayor of Tomsk in 2013 and re-elected five years later. He is considered the wealthiest mayor in Siberia. In 2019, according to the declaration, his income amounted to over 290 million rubles. The mayor’s office has repeatedly stated that the main part of the mayor’s income is interest on deposits and income from shares.
