Video game developer Riot Games Inc., which created the popular computer game League of Legends, will pay $ 100 million to settle a U.S. lawsuit in which female employees accused the company of gender discrimination. About it informs Interfax.
“We had to acknowledge the fact that, despite our best intentions, we did not always live up to our values. While we are proud of how far we have come since 2018, we must also take responsibility for the past. We hope this agreement adequately satisfies those who have had negative experiences with Riot Games and demonstrates our desire to lead by example in bringing greater responsibility and equity to the gaming industry, ”the agency quoted the company as saying.
The developer will pay $ 80 million to more than 2,000 current and former employees in California for “systematic gender discrimination and harassment.” Another $ 20 million will go towards their legal expenses.
In addition, Riot Games will have to commit $ 18 million over the next three years to fund equity, inclusiveness and fairness programs, as well as create 40 positions for former female employees in QA, video game development and design.
The company has promised to hire an independent specialist to audit gender practices.
Recall that a lawsuit against Riot Games was filed by two former employees in 2018. This came after the video game website and blog Kotaku posted posts about discriminatory practices at Riot Games. They talked about how difficult it is for women to get a job in a company and move up the career ladder.
